Fiction

Grimdark fantasy, slowly made.

The term grimdark fantasy comes from the tagline of the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game: “In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war.” The genre is marked by worlds that are brutal and unforgiving. It strips away traditional high-fantasy idealism, replacing noble heroes with characters who survive in the area between good and evil — often making their own justice.

Glen Cook, author of The Black Company, is often cited as the father of grimdark fantasy. His books greatly influenced me many years ago.

Current projects

Both novels are set in the Grimtide world of Aethon.

The Last Keeper

In beta · target 2026

A novel about the Grimtide Event — the event that created Aethon and the seminal moment of the Grimtide Series. The book is complete and currently in its final round of beta reading. Several steps remain before publication; I expect to release it before the end of 2026.

The Bastard Drenn

In progress · ~5,000 words

A second novel in progress — currently around 5,000 words — also part of the Grimtide Series.

World-building Aethon

Continuing to build the history and lore of the world my books inhabit is an ongoing effort. I suspect the majority of newsletter updates will be about that work. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do.
